Top 8: The Best Car Upholstery Cleaner Reviews

Cleaning your car can be a pain, am I right? For a long time I dreaded it, even though I knew that a dirty interior was unacceptable. So what changed? Well, the process simply became easier. If you head out to your local store today, you’ll find hundreds of products that make cleaning convenient.

However, not all of these products are good or suitable for your upholstery. That’s why I’ve done some digging and come up with a list of the 8 upholstery cleaners and tools that you should be paying attention to.

I promise that you won’t avoid cleaning your car interior ever again.

The Top 8 Best Upholstery Cleaners and Tools

1. 303 (30606) Fabric Guard Trigger Sprayer

Unlike the other cleaners on this list that work to clean your fabric, the 303 Fabric Guard Trigger Sprayer works to protect your fabric.

When applied to clean and dry fabric, the 303 Guard works to replenish any stain and water repellency that has been lost from your fabric. By doing so, it ensures that your car upholstery remains resistant to any spills and stains that may occur in the future. This in turn increases the longevity and attractive appearance of your upholstery.

The 303 Fabric Guard works perfectly on natural and synthetic fibers, and can bebest rated car upholstery cleaner 2016

This Guard also works to inhibit the growth of mildew and mold, while ensuring that the colorfastness of your fabric holds.

However, the strong odor of the Fabric Guard means that you should always use it in a ventilated space.

2. Sonax (321200-755) Upholstery and Carpet Cleaner

If you put off your cleaning for too long, you’ll find that dirt and grime has embedded itself into your car upholstery, fabrics, ceilings, carpets, plastics, and door panels. Finding a cleaner that can effectively remove this dirt while maintaining the integrity of your car interior is difficult, but not impossible.

best rated car upholstery cleaner 2016

best rated car upholstery cleanerThe Sonax Upholstery and Carpet Cleaner is a great option for all car owners struggling to get rid of stubborn dirt and stains. This cleaner uses surfactants (cleaning agents) which attach themselves to contaminants that have embedded themselves into your fibers.

Once this bonding occurs, odors will be trapped and neutralized, leaving your car smelling fresh and clean.
While the Sonax foaming-action formula is great on grease stains, you might need to combine the cleaner with home cleaning solutions for getting rid of ink stains.

3. Griot’s Garage 10956 Interior Cleaner

One of the biggest fears of a car owner is to use a product that permanently damages the appearance of their upholstery. And with all the chemicals and dyes found in today’s cleaners, this fear is not unfounded.

Luckily for both of us, I’ve come across a residue-free cleaner that retains the original color of your surfaces.

The cleaner I’m talking about is Griot’s Garage Interior Cleaner, which promises not to spot, fade, or alter the dyes of your surfaces. This allows you to clean without the fear of your colors running and ruining the appearance of your interior (always spot test this cleaner on after-market-dyed leather).

The interior cleaner is safe for vinyl, fabrics, and leather surfaces.

Because the Griot’s Garage Interior Cleaner is not a concentrate, your cleaner will not last for very long.

4. Meguiar’s D10801 Super Degreaser

If your car is full of tough stains that refuse to come out, then you need to invest in an aggressive cleaner that can eliminate the toughest stains. That’s where the Meguiar’s Super Degreaser cleaner comes in.

This fast acting cleaner has been created to handle the toughest cleaning jobs, and will work through the most stubborn grease build ups with ease.

Simply spray the diluted Super Degreaser onto your stain (it is a concentrate and therefore needs to be mixed with water), and then wipe off the dirt and grime that has been causing you trouble.

The residue-free Degreaser also leaves behind a lovely herbal fragrance, which is refreshing if you are accustomed to nasty odors.

Remember to use the Super Degreaser in an open area where you do not have to breathe it in, as the spraying mist is harsh.

5. Meguiar’s D10101 Detailer All Purpose Cleaner Gallon

If you would like to recondition your interior surfaces, then Meguiar’s Detailer All Purpose Cleaner should be on your radar. This amazing cleaner works to lift dirt from your upholstery, carpet, leather, and vinyl, using a combination of optical brighteners and fabric softeners that leave your interior looking clean and new.

best rated car upholstery cleaner 2016

car upholstery cleaner reviewsUnlike other car cleaners that barely foam, the foaming action on the Meguiar’s Detailer All Purpose Cleaner is nothing short of superior.

The only gripe that I can find with this cleaner is its shipping costs, which are almost equal to the price of the product.

Luckily, this cleaner has a 1 gallon capacity, so you won’t be shipping it regularly.

6. Mothers Carpet & Upholstery Brush

If you are looking for a brush that offers amazing scrubbing power, look no further than the Mothers Carpet & Upholstery Brush.

This lightweight brush has been designed with a comfortable non-slip grip, allowing for a firm hold when you are loosening embedded dirt.

best rated car upholstery cleaner 2016

best car upholstery cleaner products reviewsThe ergonomic brush has also been designed with stiff bristles with scratch-free properties.

While these stiff bristles allow you to remove deeply embedded dirt, they might be too tough for some fabrics such as leather. That’s why you need to test out the brush on a hidden area of fabric, to ensure that the bristles do not damage the fibers of your carpet or upholstery.

7. Mothers Detail Brush Set

While most brushes aim to loosen dirt that has embedded itself into your carpet and upholstery fibers, the Mothers Detail Brush aims to eliminate dirt in hidden areas.

This Detail Brush is designed with a comfort grip, soft scratch-free bristles, and a useful rubber tip. All of this makes the brush excellent for emblems, trims, vents, seams, and other tight crevices in your car.

8. Detail Buddy Premium Detail Brush

While the detailing brush described above comes with soft bristles that easily bend, the Detail Buddy Premium Detail Brush comes with solvent resistant bristles that can easily handle tough cleaning jobs.

This detailing brush is perfect for removing dirt and grime that has found its way into your emblems, trim, vents, and seats, and it is gentle enough to extract the dirt without damaging your interior. best rated car upholstery cleaner 2016

You should not use this versatile detail brush on paint surfaces as it might cause minor scratches.

As you can see, the upholstery cleaners and tools given above all excel in a unique area. It is therefore up to you to choose the cleaner(s) and tool(s) that is most suitable for your needs, and then get started with cleaning your car exhaustively.

Top 5: Whats The Best Brake Fluid?

Top 5: Whats The Best Brake Fluid?

Brake Fluid is easily one of the most neglected fluids in most vehicles around the world. Manufacturers recommend that you change your brake fluid every 3 years. The Brake Fluid posses life saving qualities yet people often check everything except the brake fluid.

In order to help understand the importance  and to find the best brake fluid we will learn about the chemical properties and what is the purpose of brake fluid.

All Brake fluid are synthetic hydraulic fluid that helps apply pressure to the brake components.

Hydraulic fluids are the mediums used to transfer power through out hydraulic components. Hydraulic fluids are known for transferring force into pressure which is how your foot applying pressure to your brakes stops your vehicle.

This is important because new brake fluid is incompressible, which helps apply quality pressure to the brake mechanism.

This is especially important for:

Those who commute long distances in warm weather. When brake fluid is overheated it puts your brake mechanism at risk. Once the brake fluid begins boiling the fluid turns into a gas and makes the gas compressible. Leaving your brakes very soft and will lead to “cadence braking”.

Cadence braking is also referred to as stutter braking, meaning repeatedly pressing the brake to prevent the brakes from locking up.

Most modern vehicles have anti-lock brakes or “ABS” if there is no pressure in the brake lines this system will not provide to much assistance. There are a few braking techniques here.

Source: USDOT

* DOT refers to the Department of Transportation and the numbers refer to the different viscosity limit brake fluid is made of.

Viscosity Limit

The brake fluid grade comes from the different temperatures that the fluid maintains while its stable and the corrosion characteristics. There are more characteristics taken into consideration but we are going to just focus on those two.

Viscosity is important to those that have ABS systems because the pressure and volume of fluid is not transferred. This means manufacturer’s suggested viscosity is important to take into consideration.

Is one of two brake fluids that are capable of absorbing water from the air. DOT3 is Glycol Ether Based. The benefit of using Glycol Ether is its high boiling point with a lower molecular weight. DOT3 is a very commonly used brake fluid because it is the most economical when it comes to meeting the government standards.

Is the next brake fluid that can absorb water through the air, when handling both DOT3 & DOT4. it is important to limit the exposure to the air. Also you don’t to spill any of this on your car because of the chemical properties of the Glycol Ether.

Only open the brake fluid reservoir when necessary, make sure you seal the plastic bottle tightly. DOT4 has a high stability and a high boiling point when its new.

If, water is absorbed into DOT4 the boiling point drops rapidly, even more than DOT3. DOT4 is referred to as a race or performance brake fluid because of the viscosity limit. Therefore when it comes to performance vehicle it is important to change your brake fluid more frequently.

Unlike DOT3 and DOT4, DOT5 fluid doesn’t absorb water.

DOT 5.1 is also hydrophobic which means non absorbing and is used because of the lower chances of corrosion. DOT 5.1 used to be exclusively in the high performance industry because it requires so much attention.

DOT 5 has its benefits of being silicon based, it won’t chip paint if you spill it on your car. When pouring DOT 5 you have to pour slowly. Pouring too fast will create air bubbles and this will put gas in your brake lines which will leave your vehicle at risk.

If your vehicle is use as a sunday driver it almost certainly will have to be bleed after every time you let it sit for a long time. The moisture in the brake lines pool at the lowest point which is normally in the caliper. This once again makes the fluid compressible and puts your vehicle at risk.

Best Race Brake Fluid

If you are a individual that likes making your own modifications to your vehicle you may find selecting the proper brake fluid a little tricky but it’s not.

Unless your vehicle is on a race track or a drift car your best option will still be a DOT3 or DOT4. This gives you an advantage of predictable gauge of how much your brakes can handle. You don’t have to change this fluid or bleed your lines as frequently as using any other brake fluid. In other words you have less chance of corrosion.

Best Brake Fluid

When it comes to brake fluid you have a very simple decision to make, but first you have to decide what your intentions are. If you are just looking for something for your daily commute DOT 3 is for you

Prestone AS400 DOT 3 Synthetic Brake Fluid

Is good for your light trucks and can be used on drum and disc brakes. Prestone as400 also has a high temperature stability which is a key factor when looking for a brake fluid. What helps to set this apart is the ability to flow at low temperatures and keep water from penetrating the hydraulic fluid.

HI-TEMP 570 Brake Fluid

hi-temp-brake-fluid_6Is best racing Dot 3 brake fluid and is engineered to be easy to use. HI-TEMP has a low viscosity which helps with the bleeding and the flowing of the hydraulic brake fluid.

This helps with braking and maintain a long smooth brake pedal.  HI-TEMP formula helps the elimination of aeration in case of cadence braking and helps maintains a functional system.

Best Brake Fluid for Vehicles using DOT4 is

Motul RBF600 DOT 4 Brake Fluid

RBF600 some of has the highest dry and wet boiling points in the brake fluid industry. One things that helps it stand out is the presence of nitrogen in the bottle rather than air which helps increase its shelf life and eliminate contamination. RBF600 is a racing brake fluid but can also be used for light range hauling trucks and cars.

Castrol SRF Brake Fluid

CASTROL_SRF_brake_fluid_detail_1_psph__17551.1419387901.600.600Is a special european blend made for their temperate environment. This also has anti-vapor lock properties that helps keep the fluid dry. For those that live in a colder climate this may appeal to you to help with moisture in the air.

Dot 51. brake Fluids

Motul 100951 Brake Fluid DOT 5.1

Is a long life silicon based formula made for anti-lock brakes (ABS). This fluid has a lower viscosity so this enables it to travel easier through the micro-valves of anti-lock brake systems.

Braking (get it) It Down

Ultimately using the manufacturer’s recommended brake fluid is the way to go. If you’re a enthusiast driving a rare car around you will want to go with DOT5. You just have to keep in mind bleed your lines if it sat for a long time.

Nowadays most companies make a combination brake fluid. You can find DOT 3 and 4 anywhere. If you live in a very hot region and operate a military like vehicle DOT5.1 is for you.

How Often Should I Wax My Car? Old, New and In Between

You watch in an almost sinful awe as beads of moisture slowly roll off the glorious glistening body before you. You stall, spraying it again and watch pinpoints of sunlight kiss each and every droplet of water.

That’s right, it’s fresh car wax day, and enjoying the impeccable shine of your automotive beauty is just the beginning of the benefits that come with keeping your car waxed.

how often should i wax my car? Should it be done every couple of weeks or every year? Welcome back car enthusiasts, today we are going to answer the question: How often and when do you need to wax to keep the body of your vehicle to keep it looking it’s best?

How Often Should I Wax My Car

When To Wax Your Car?

Check almost any automotive site and they will all agree that for optimum shine you are going to want to wax your car every three months.

That’s around four times a year or once a new season begins if you want to think about it that way.

If you’re asking yourself: “Do I Really Need to Wax My Car?” The answer is, technologically you don’t NEED to, especially if you plan on riding around in a dusty, dull looking, scratched up car.

But, if you want a clean, shiny ride- you know, be one of those red cars on the road that you cant help but look at.

Related: Best Wax For Black Cars

Or ride around one of those all black Dodge Chargers that still look sharp in the dark; you’d want to keep the car waxed. You can do it yourself- get the best wax and do it by hand or you can buy a buffer to help the process along. And, of course, you can visit you nearest detailing shop.

The point is, a routine waxing is still one of the most important parts of your vehicle’s aesthetic maintenance.

If you want to enjoy the benefit of waxing, but aren’t particularly worried about a high shine, you can cut this regime down to twice a year. This will still provide the protection your car needs from outside elements and keep the resale price at a good number.

Not Sure If “Shelly” NEEDS A Wax? Do A Wax Test

A quick way to know whether or not your car needs a waxing, is to pour a little water on the hood of your car and see whether or not it forms a good size bead on the paint.

Take a look at the video, “How to Tell if it Needs Wax” to see this process:

Enter your text here…

If the water beads, like you see in the picture above, then your wax levels are good

If the beads are smaller or nonexistent then it’s time to pull out the wax or hit your favorite detailer.

Its Not All About Looks. Its About Protection & Prevention!

When left outside for any amount of time cars become vulnerable to it’s surroundings. It could be the kids throwing a frisbee up and down the street, or that kid that thinks it’s cool to touch all the cars with his studded gloves.

Nothing causes more damage to an exterior of a car then the weather, and it is for all of these reason that wax is so important to your automobile.

When looking into the benefits of waxing your vehicle, paint protection is one of the many ways car wax helps to retain your car’s beauty (and value).

How Soon Can You Wax A New Car?

How Often Should I Wax My Car

So what about that new car you just took off the lot? It has clear protective coating and shouldn’t need wax for at least a year right?

Actually, this assumption is incorrect.

In the past when cars arrived at the dealerships from the factory, the top layers of paint were usually dry, but the layers beneath still needed time. Therefore dealerships suggested that your first wax not happen for a while to give the paint and clearcoat an appropriate time to completely set.

According to the article, “When to Wax a Brand New Car” on, you can wax your new car as soon as a few weeks after its initial use.

So don’t be afraid to pull out the wax and get to work.

Wax vs Polish: Whats The Difference?

When you have decided that it is time to wax your car, you may come across two different items, Car Wax and Car Polish. So which do you choose? The answer to this questions lies in the condition of your car.

What is the Difference Between Polish and Wax:

Wax is used to protect the paint of your car, and polish is used to repair the paint. Simply put, if you have been giving your car a regularly scheduled waxing at least twice a year, then you can continue waxing.

If you have laxed on the routine then you may need to use a polish to first repair the damage that has been done to the exterior paint of your vehicle.

The video, “How to Clean, Polish and Wax Your Car” by Barry’s Auto Body will show you the polish and wax process to help you get started.

Now You Know How Often You Should Wax Your Car!

And there you have it, everything you need to know about how often you need to wax your car. This along with your scheduled maintenance and detailing will ensure a high resale value and quality performance out of your vehicle.

Let’s take a closer look at the Karcher K5 Premium and its features:

Karcher K5 2000 PSI ReviewKarcher K5 2000 PSI Review

2000 PSI (Pounds Per Square Inch)

For its size, the Karcher K5 packs a lot of punch. 2000 psi gives you plenty of pressure to wash away stubborn grime on your house but preserve the paint on your car. A weaker psi gives you less cleaning power, and a stronger psi risks damage to whatever it is you’re trying to clean. The Karcher K5 finds that middle ground and delivers.

1.4 GPM

Karcher K5 2000 PSI ReviewKarcher K5 Review

Backing up the 2000 psi is a water source of 1.4 GPM, enough to keep the cleaning power flowing. If it had any more power, you’d be using far more water than necessary.

The Karcher K5 was engineered to do more with a conservative amount of water, saving your water bill.

Karcher K5 2000 PSI Review

Vario Spray Wand

A perfect starter wand, the Vario Spray Wand allows you to switch between low and high pressure with ease. There’s plenty of in-between settings too. You won’t have a problem finding the perfect amount of pressure for whatever job you face.

Karcher K5 2000 PSI Reviewkarcher k5 pressure washer review

25 Foot Hose

Nothing will be out of reach with the included 25 foot hose. Reach the top of your vehicle no matter how high it is. Don’t worry about dragging the pressure washer around with you, you’ve got plenty of reach with this hose.

7.7 Inch Wheels

Don’t worry about lugging the Karcher K5 around your yard, it comes equipped with wheels. Mobility is not a problem for this pressure washer. In the event that the 25 foot hose is too short, the wheels will get the pressure washer to wherever it needs to be.

32 Pounds

At 32 pounds, the Karcher K5 has enough mass to get the job done but is light enough to make transportation relatively easy. You shouldn’t have to be a body builder to move your pressure washer around your property, and you won’t have to with the Karcher K5.

Internally Water-Cooled Motor

This feature saves the life of your motor and therefore the life of your pressure washer. Motors can become very hot when used continuously. If they run for too long without time to cool, the heat will accelerate the wear and tear on the motor. With this feature the motor stays cool longer, adding longevity to the motor.

Simply A Better Pressure Washer

The Karcher K5 Premium is not without its competition. However, its features can stand up to any rival. Let’s take a look at a few.

GreenWorks GPW 1702

  • 1700 psi

  • Only 1.2 GPM

A quick glance at the GreenWorks GPW is enough to see that its specs just don’t measure up to the Karcher K5. You get about half the power with the GreenWorks GPW 1702.

Powerstroke PS80519B

  • 2200 psi

  • 140cc

Although the Powerstroke is more powerful than the Karcher K5, the Powerstroke doesn’t come with nearly as many features as the Karcher does. You will get much more with the Karcher K5 than with the Powerstroke PS80519B.

AR Blue Clean AR 118

  • 1500 psi

  • 1.5 GPM

The AR Blue Clean AR 118 is a little baby of a pressure washer. Don’t expect much from this little guy. With its limited pressure capabilities, you won’t get as much out of the AR Blue Clean as you would from the Karcher.

The Choice Is Clear

The Karcher K5 Premium provides enough power to wash a car and many other cleaning tasks for just the right price. It combines portability, power, and affordability into one perfect pressure washer. The abundance of features guarantees that the Karcher K5 is well equipped for just about any job. If you’re tired of wasting your time washing your car and staring at dirt and grime around your house, the Karcher K5 Premium is the power washer for you.

Ivation Electric Pressure Washer 2200 PSI Review

Ivation Electric Pressure Washer 2200 PSI Review

A Review In The Making

Most of us these days have extremely busy lives. We do not have a lot of time to add extra errands into our day. If you are anything like me, you are cautious about your time and your money. I try to save myself time and money wherever I can.

I recently bought a new SUV for business. While having a conversation about saving money and time, a friend suggested looking into a pressure washer to save myself the time and money needed to get my SUV washed on a regular basis.

ivation electric pressure washer reviewivation electric pressure washer review

Researching A Pressure Washer

Pressure washers have been around for years now. There are different brands and models to suit the needs of all types of projects. Most pressure washers are bought for the purpose of cleaning decks, patios, stain removal of concrete surfaces, and furniture. Pressure washers make the cleaning process go by faster than doing it by hand.

There are a few things to be aware of when deciding which pressure washer is the right one for you. The first thing to consider is the type of pressure washer you need. There are two types of pressure washers: gas and electric. Each type serves a separate purpose. The gas pressure washer is more powerful than electric washers. A gas washer can pump out 2,000 to 2,800lbs. of water per square inch. You could use a gas pressure washer for cleaning siding and other large areas. You can also use it to get rid of gum and tree sap.

ivation electric pressure washer reviewivation electric pressure washer review

An electric pressure washer puts out 1,000 to 1,800lbs. of water per square inch. You can use an electric pressure washer for cleaning up small patios, furniture, decks, and other surfaces that cannot handle the pressure a gas washer puts out.

Pay attention to the features. You want to get a pressure washer that comes with a soap tank, wheels, a place to store the cord, if you are getting an electric washer, and nozzles that are not only adjustable but removable. You want to get a washer that has a collection of replaceable nozzles for different washing task.

The best way to determine which pressure washer is the appropriate one for your project is to know what you plan to use it for. If your goal is to get a pressure washer to help you save on car washes, as I plan to do, look at pressure washers designed for versatility.

Introducing The Ivation Pressure Washer

The Ivation Pressure Washer is a high-end pressure washer that packs a punch. Pressure washer is at the top of the electric pressure washer price point and it offers plenty of features to accommodate for the cost. The Ivation gives you the ability to wash multiple types of surfaces with ease. It is easy to setup and easy to use.

Features To Get Excited About

ivation electric pressure washer reviewIvation Electric Pressure Washer 2200 PSI Review

Ivation spared no expense when it came to providing us with useful features. This pressure washer pumps out 2,200 pounds per inch. Its 1,600-watt motor can produce a 1.8 GPM rate of water flow and it has 110 to 240 Volts of electricity power.

You have a choice of using five interchangeable nozzles, a tap adapter, soap tank, pump auto-shutoff, and copper gun hose. You will also benefit from the auto-shutoff feature.

This feature shuts the system down when you stop using it. You can save a lot of money and water with this feature. It also has a self-suction feature enabling you to use stand alone water when you do not have a hose available.

Pros and Cons

The pros for this product make cleaning a successful endeavor.

  • Automatic Shut-off

  • 5 Replacement Nozzles

  • Easy Setup

As with all products, there are cons to consider. The cons for the Ivation are as follows:

  • Cost is at the top of the scale
  • No knob to switch from soap to water
  • Only a one year warranty.

I want to take good care of my car and keep it clean. Cars run better when they are cleaned and receive their required maintenance. There are a lot of pressure washers on the market. It is a great idea to look at all your options before pulling the trigger on just one. The thing I think I like most about this particular model is the fact that you can change nozzles and clean your car, then sidewalk etc. Versatility is key. This is a pressure washer I will be doing more research into for purchase consideration.

You will find that this product helps get your dashboard and other parts of your car as clean as possible.

4. Meguiar’s G4116 Natural Shine Protectant – 16 oz

Best Dashboard Cleanersdashboard cleaners review

One of the biggest differences between the Meguiar’s G4116 Natural Shine Protectant and the Meguiar’s G4116 Quik Interior Cleaner is the finish.

The Quik Interior Cleaner has a matte finish while the natural shine has a much more, you guessed it, shiny finish in comparison. Look at this video to see the difference for yourself:

The difference is purely preference. One look is not necessarily better than the other. Both are water-based rather than oil-based.

Another difference between the Meguiar products is what surfaces the product can be used on. The Natural Shiner Cleanser can not be used on all of the interior surfaces. Do not use on leather!

This product protects against UV rays. As mentioned previously, this is important to prevent your car from becoming discolored or cracked. This is particularly important if your car is parked in the sun during work or at home.

5. Armor All 10848 Protectant and Cleaning Wipe

Best Dashboard Cleanersbest dashboard cleaners review

The Armor All 10848 Protectant and Cleaning Wipe only comes in wipes. It’s another option for a quick cleaner that can be done in between more in-depth detailing. This is a great option to keep in your glove box or your trunk and use when you can.

The product will spruce up the look of your interior by removing dirt and other messes. These wipes are made to provide a natural looking matte finish. I greatly prefer this over the glossier finishes because of how natural it looks.

This product works on just about everything (vinyl, fabric, carpet, consoles, leather, and plastic), but it is not best to use this product on the exterior or a touch screen.

This not have any strong smell to it. These wipes come in two packs of twenty five wipes.

I hope you enjoyed the list and have an idea of what makes each product unique and which one will be the best choice for you. Many of the products are similar, but you should think about whether the product is a spray or a wipe, what materials it can work on, and the type of finish that the product leaves.

Please comment anything you agree or disagree with. Also please comment if you have any experience with these products yourself. Don’t forget to share with the car lovers in your life as well.

What You Should Know before You Start Cleaning Your Car’s Upholstery

You should be are aware that not all upholstery is similar. The difference in upholstery lies in its weave, which refers to the style in which the fabric fibers have been entwined together.

So why does this matter to you?

Well, upholstery with traditional or medium weaves has a good amount of raised fibers above the surface of the fabric. This allows you to easily sift through the fibers and pick up dirt and grime.

Upholstery with tight weaves has no raised fibers, which means that dirt and grime is embedded into the fabric. If you let dirt sit for too long on upholstery with a tight weave, then it will be impossible for all of the dirt to come out.

It is therefore advised for you to clean up spills and messes as soon as they happen to prevent permanent stains.

This also applies to carpets with tight weaves such as Berber carpets.

If you are wondering what type of weave you have in your car, check out the following illustrations:

What To Use To Clean Car Upholstery

Before you start the cleaning process and find the best way to clean car upholstery, you will need to grab these items.

1. All-Purpose Cleaner

While many car experts tout separate cleaning products for different surface materials, all-purpose cleaners negate the need for dedicated cleaners. In this way, you don’t have to buy separate cleaners for your upholstery, leather, vinyl, and shampoo needs.

There are a good number of all-purpose cleaners on the market, and I would recommend Meguiar’s Detailer All Purpose Cleaner for general cleaning and Meguiar’s Super Degreaser for tough cleaning jobs.

If you do not want to use a store bought all-purpose cleaner for your upholstery cleaning, here are a few homemade alternatives that are cheap and easy to make:

  • Mix 1 part dishwashing liquid with 1 part water, use this on fabric upholstery
  • Mix 6 tablespoons of a bar soap (e.g. Ivory bar soap), with 2 tablespoons of borax, and 2 cups of boiling water. Once the mixture is cool, you can use it to clean your fabric upholstery
  • Mix baking soda and water into a paste, and use it on vinyl upholstery. Once you’ve rubbed this paste onto the seat, rinse it off with soapy water and then dry it off with a clean microfiber cloth. Your vinyl will be clean and polished

2. Interior Brush

You will also need a brush to scrub dirt and grime off your seats, carpets, and floor mats.

Recommended Interior Brushes

  1. Mothers Carpet and Upholstery Brush
  2. OXO Good Grips Heavy Duty Scrub Brush
  3. Magnolia Brush Vinyl Leather Scrub

3. Detail Brush

A detail brush will help you clean tight spaces and crevices where dirt may be hiding. My recommendation is the Wheel Woolies Boars Hair Detail Brush.

Brand new toothbrush: a cheap alternative to a detail brush which allows you to clean tight spaces and crevices.

4. Fabric Protector/Stain Repellent

Once you’ve finished shampooing your upholstery, you should apply a fabric protector/stain repellant to make it difficult for stains to embed in your upholstery. This keeps your upholstery looking cleaner for longer, while extending its life.

Recommended Interior Brushes

  1. Scotchgard Auto Fabric and Carpet Protector
  2. Chemical Guys: Fabric Guard Interior Protector Shield
  3. 303 Fabric Guard, 128 Fl. oz.

5. Leather Conditioner

A leather conditioner like Lexol Leather Conditioner and Leather Honey will help:

– Nourish your leather for a smooth look

– Strengthen your leather to prevent cracks, and

– Prolong the life of your leather.

6. Microfiber Towel/Cloth

A microfiber towel allows you to blot and lift up stains, as well as pick up dirt particles. The soft material will not scratch your upholstery.

Vacuuming Your Car

Before you begin cleaning your car upholstery, start by vacuuming all surfaces of your car. By doing so, you can pick up the loose dirt and debris littering your interior.

How to Properly Vacuum Your Car

1. Use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner e.g. a Shop-Vac, as they have powerful suction and quality attachments that are easy to use in your car.

2. Vacuum underneath the seats of the car and in between the creases- this may require you to push the seats forward and recline them.

3. Remove the floor mats before you vacuum.

4. If you have a child car seat, be sure to remove it as it may be hiding food, crayons, and other pieces of dirt.

5. If your car is extremely dirt, rent a steam cleaner to give your upholstery and carpet a deep clean. Steam cleaners work to extract embedded dirt using a hot water and suction technique.

How to Steam Clean Car DIY

  • PRO TIP: Vacuum your car at least once a month to prevent the buildup of dirt and debris. As dirt and debris accumulates in the interior of your car, they embed in your carpets and upholstery making them tough to lift out. Regular vacuum cleaning prevents this from happening.

Many cars use a combination of materials in their interior (e.g. fabric floor mats, vinyl seats), and that is why the guide below shows you how to clean car upholstery based on your specific material type.

How to Clean Fabric Upholstery

How to Clean Car Upholstery YourselfClean Car Upholstery

STEP 1:  Vacuum your carpets and upholstery, removing the dry dirt and debris. Remove crayons and any other items that will melt under hot temperatures. Melted crayons in particular are tough to remove from fabric upholstery.

  • PRO TIP: Your messes and spills can embed into the fabric of your upholstery if they are left for too long. When you make a mess, clean it up straight away in order to prevent permanent staining and unwelcome odors.
  • Additionally, get rid of garbage from your car on a regular basis to prevent clutter and staining. The dredges of your nearly empty coffee cup can spill onto your fabric and cause stubborn stains.

STEP 2: Spray your upholstery with the all-purpose cleaner (or your homemade solution), holding the cleaner at least 6-inches away. Make sure you work on one area at a time/one seat at a time.

How to Clean Car Upholstery Yourselfbest way to clean car upholstery

STEP 3: Use your brush to scrub your upholstery firmly but gently, ensuring that grime and stains are removed.

How to Clean Car Upholstery Yourselfcar Upholstery

STEP 4: Wet your microfiber towel in warm water, and then run it over the scrubbed upholstery picking up dirt. Make sure you rinse out the towel as you collect dirt so that you are not spreading dirt around.

STEP 5: If your upholstery is very dirty, you will need to scrub and towel off the dirty area several times until it is fully clean.

STEP 6: Once your upholstery is clean, use a microfiber towel to dry it off.

STEP 7: Move onto the next section of your upholstery, and repeat steps 2-6.

How to Clean Car Upholstery YourselfCleaning Car Upholstery

STEP 8: Take your detailing brush/toothbrush and clean in between the seams of your upholstery, as dirt and grime often gets stuck here. These tight spaces are usually easy to miss with your vacuum cleaner or microfiber towel.

STEP 9: Use your brush and all-purpose cleaner to thoroughly clean your floor mats, and then rinse them out with clean, warm water. Remember to dry them off with your microfiber towel.

STEP 10: Spray your carpets and upholstery with fabric protector to repel stains and water.

How to Clean Leather and Faux Leather Upholstery

STEP 1: Vacuum your carpets and upholstery, removing dry dirt and debris. Do not use a metal attachment as this might scratch your leather.

  • PRO TIP: If your leather upholstery has difficult to remove stains, you will need to pretreat it with a leather conditioner. Once this done, rub a leather stain remover over the stain and leave it there for 30 seconds.
  • Once the time has elapsed, wipe off the stain remover and proceed. Always test your stain remover before you use it on your leather upholstery in order to prevent permanent damage. You should test it on a hidden spot of leather to ensure color-fastness.

STEP 2: Apply the all-purpose cleaner on a section of your leather upholstery, and then rub in the cleaner using your microfiber cloth.

How to Clean Car Upholstery Yourselfbest car upholstery cleaner

STEP 3: Rinse your cloth in water, and then run the damp cloth over the leather removing the dirt and cleaning agent along the way.

STEP 4: Once the leather has been fully cleaned, allow it to dry naturally. Ensure that all stains and soap spots have been removed.

Step 5: Move onto the next section of your upholstery, and repeat steps 2-4.

STEP 6: Once the leather is fully dry, apply the leather conditioner using your microfiber cloth. The leather conditioner replaces the oils in your leather, leaving it smooth and stunning. If there is any excess conditioner wipe it off, and wait for at least 20 minutes before you use your car.

  • PRO TIP: Stay away from petroleum-based leather conditioners as they leave an oily finish and might cling to your clothes. Use water-based conditioners for maximum benefits.

STEP 7: Take your detailing brush/toothbrush and clean in between the seams of your upholstery, as dirt and grime often gets stuck here. These tight spaces are usually easy to miss with your vacuum cleaner or microfiber towel.

STEP 8: Use your brush and all-purpose cleaner to thoroughly clean your floor mats, and then rinse them out with clean, warm water. Remember to dry them off with your microfiber towel.

  • PRO TIP: Clean your leather in a warm environment, as heat causes leather to respond more favorably to your cleaners and conditioners. If it is cold outside, you can turn on the heater for just a few minutes before you start cleaning.

How to Clean Vinyl Upholstery

STEP 1: Vacuum your carpets and upholstery, removing dry dirt and debris. Do not use a metal attachment as this might scratch your vinyl.

STEP 2: Spray your all-purpose cleaner on your vinyl upholstery, and then scrub your upholstery using your interior brush. Wipe off the dirt and excess cleaner with your microfiber cloth, and repeat the process until the dirt and grime is gone. The good news is that the texture of vinyl upholstery makes it very easy to clean.

  • PRO TIP: Do not use oil-based cleaners on vinyl upholstery as they will cause the upholstery to harden.

STEP 3: Once you are done cleaning one area of your upholstery, move onto the next area.

How to Clean Car Upholstery: Removing Stains from Your Upholstery

1. Loose Pen: Ink Stains

How to Clean Car Upholstery Yourself

Ink stains are fairly common in cars, especially if you have a little one who enjoys drawing and doing their homework in the back seat. When it comes to ink stains, a combination of hairspray and water will work well. Simply spray the hairspray on the ink stain, and then blot the stain with a clean and slightly damp cloth.

You can also use rubbing alcohol instead of hairspray- just ensure that the ink stain does not run on your upholstery.

2. Oil and Greasy Stains

If you enjoy eating or applying makeup in your car, then greasy stains are not an uncommon sight. For greasy or oily stains, you should use a mixture of paint thinner and water (equal parts of each). Dip your cotton cloth into the diluted paint thinner mixture, and rub the mixture into the greasy stain.

If you are not a fan of the paint thinner method, you can use cornmeal or salt instead. In this case, sprinkle the cornmeal or salt over the stain, and leave it overnight. You can then vacuum the stained area the morning after.

  • PRO TIP: Ensure that you test the paint thinner mixture on a hidden spot of your upholstery to guarantee that it will not cause any damage.

3. In a Rush, Just Hit A Bump… Coffee stains

I don’t know about you, but I’m a huge coffee lover. Unfortunately, one small slip caused by a quick stop or tight swerve can have your Joe splashed across your arms, clothes, and car interior. While you can quickly mop up coffee that has spilled on vinyl or plastic surfaces, you should pay special care with other surface materials.

How to Clean Car Upholstery Yourselfcar upholstery cleaning diy

Add a little bit of cold water in order to dilute the coffee, and then blot the stain using a paper towel. Once you have blotted your coffee stain, add all-purpose cleaner or glass cleaner to the stain and wait for 5 minutes. Once the time has elapsed, blot the stain once again.

Related: The Worst Things You Can Spill In Your Car

If you can still see the coffee stain, you will need to scrub your upholstery with the all-purpose cleaner. Once you have scrubbed and wiped down the stain with your microfiber towel, blot the stained area once more using paper towels.

  • PRO TIP: Blotting the stain instead of scrubbing it will ensure that the stain does not set in.

4. Stains from  Unpleasant Motion Sickness: Carsickness Stains

How to Clean Car Upholstery Yourselfdo it yourself car fabric upholstery cleaners

Getting car sick is something that all car owners should prepare for, whether the offender is you, your kids, or your pets. Because vomit is acidic, you need to clean up all traces of it to stop it from setting into your seats and carpets.

Start by wiping off the vomit using a paper towel or cloth.

Next, dilute the acidic vomit stain using cold water, followed by a quick wash with soap and warm water.

In order to neutralize the vomit, pour club soda on a cloth and blot the stain.

If you do not have club soda, a mixture of water and baking soda will remove the stain and the odor at once.

5. Blood Stains from Cuts and Accidents

Blood is an exceptionally stubborn stain, and it can ruin many types of carpets and upholstery. You should note that hot water and soap mixtures cause blood stains to set in, so stay away from this combination when cleaning out blood.

How to Clean Car Upholstery Yourselfwhat to use to clean car upholstery

Start by soaking your microfiber cloth in cold water, and then blot the blood stain. As you soak up blood rinse the cloth, and then repeat the blotting process until the blood stain has disappeared.

7. Alcohol Stains: Hey, Bottles Fall and Cans Pop

Firstly, do not drink and drive!

In a scenario where your groceries spill out and your beer cracks open and spills over your upholstery, this is the stain removal process you should use. Dilute the alcohol stain with cold water so that it does not set into your upholstery.

Blot the stain with a damp cloth until the stain lifts off. The odor should dissipate soon after, ensuring that your car doesn’t smell like the inside of a beer keg.

There you have it, the complete guide on how to clean car upholstery. Whether you have leather, fabric, or vinyl upholstery, there is an efficient method to get rid of embedded grime and maintain the spectacular look of your interior.

Even if a stubborn stain threatens to cause permanent damage, there are easy and affordable ways to get them out.

The most important thing to remember is that constant maintenance is the best way to ensure the integrity of your car’s upholstery. By preventing spills and messes from setting in, you can leave your seats looking as good as new for years to come.
